On Wednesday 16 June, the Government announced more than £16 million funding to strengthen support for children with a social worker by extending the role of Virtual School Heads. The press notice can be found here.
Each local authority is eligible to receive funding to support the extension of the Virtual School Head. Funding has been made available for the financial year, up to 31 March 2022 and we have published the Grant Determination Letter, including local authority funding allocations.
The Department for Education, with the help of the National Association of Virtual School Heads and the Association of Directors of Children’s Services has produced and issued non-statutory guidance to inform how Virtual School Heads undertake this role.
The Department for Education intends to appoint a research partner to learn from this change in role and help develop best practice. All local authorities are being asked to sign a Memorandum of Understanding by 31 July 2021, which describes how they can work with the research partner.
