Glasses in Classes

In the 2021/22 academic year, we will start a new initiative called ‘Glasses in Classes’ to support children to get their eyes tested and then have the appropriate follow-up appointments and access to glasses, where needed.

This is based on a pilot project in Bradford Opportunity Area which showed signs of positive progress. Between 10-15% of children who have an eyesight test are diagnosed as needing glasses. Of those around 30% are not taken to opticians to get glasses. Half of those who do attend an optician’s appointment do not wear their glasses. Here is more on the impact it has had across Bradford.

We are looking to work with 25 schools across the borough next year to trial school-led vision screening one school year, most likely year 2 and in year 7.

The main responsibility for schools would be to identify a ‘vision coordinator’, this could be any member of staff that works best for your setting. A vision coordinator needs to attend one training session of around an hour.

We would train the vision coordinate to carry out a short vision screen on children and will provide the equipment to support this. The vision coordinator would also be responsible for looking after the school pair of glasses and to provide these to the children, if necessary. The role may also involve speaking with parents to reassure and follow up on appointments.

Senior mental health lead training

We are encouraging schools and colleges committed to implementing a whole school or colleges approach to mental health to begin booking quality assured training for their senior mental health lead.

The guidance has been updated with with further information and links to tools to help senior mental health leads to select and book one of over sixty five courses available to meet their needs, and how to subsequently get a £1200 grant from DfE to cover or contribute towards costs incurred.

A digital grant application service will also be available later in autumn term, we encourage schools and colleges meeting the terms and conditions for a grant to proceed to book a quality assured course. Eligible schools and colleges booking early will still need to apply for a grant, but should sign up here to be notified when they can apply.

Once the grant application service is available, and because training grants are limited to around a third of schools and colleges in 2021/22, schools will then need to apply for a grant first to ensure they have secured a training grant before they proceed to book a quality assured course.

Refreshed Whole School or College Approach guidance
DfE and PHE have worked together to also update the guidance on whole school or college approaches to mental health, reflecting the most recent children and young people’s mental health prevalence data, the role of the senior mental health lead in implementing approaches, and new case studies to illustrate this. This will be available here.

Revealing Hidden Horizons

In this latest Opportunity Area update, we share news of an extra-curricular project that is helping to improve relationships, learning and engagement at a popular Scarborough primary school.

Hidden Horizons

With support from the Opportunity Area, Northstead Primary School commissioned an exciting after-school project led by Hidden Horizons, a Scarborough-based company specialising in delivering outdoor activities, including fossil hunting, stargazing and bush craft.

After-school clubs are certainly enjoyable but not an innovation. However, the difference here is that Northstead has tasked Hidden Horizons to work with vulnerable or disadvantaged children and their parents, to give families and children the chance to work together, strengthening relationships.

Rob Hallatt, OA Communications Officer, talked with Shaun Hopper (Deputy Headteacher at Northstead) to learn a bit more about the project and its impact so far.

Rob: Why this project?

Shaun: We started about two years ago. We decided to use some of our Opportunity Area money to enhance cultural experiences for our children. Hidden Horizons worked with us to get the children outside and into all kinds of weird and wonderful places within an hour and a half of school. That worked successfully and parents were really engaged in school life so with the easing of restrictions, we have restarted the project.

Rob: What makes it a successful project and how has COVID affected roll out?

Shaun: What Hidden Horizons provide, that we could not as a school, is expertise because they are experts in geology, experts in fossils and experts in outdoor learning. As a school, we might have one or two people who could do that, but actually having the time to enable teachers to do that is not possible. In terms of COVID, this time around the Hidden Horizons team have just been working with the children. Obviously, we have worked on maintaining good communication between home and school. We’ve shared with parents what we’ve done in each session so they can maybe try it at home to build on what the children have done already.

Rob: How did you select pupils for the project?

Shaun: The club is open to all children, including those who really enjoy school and learning but who also have a real keen interest in science and geography. We have been keen to get children involved who we might class as ‘disadvantaged’. We ring parents and send emails and messages saying, ‘Get them to this club’ and ‘They really enjoy this kind of thing in school’ and so on.

Rob: What has been the impact of the project so far?

Shaun: It is always hard to measure with something like this. When I’ve been speaking to the children they all say they really enjoy it and that has carried over into school life. I plan to run a focus group with the kids to ask, ‘What worked really well?’ ‘What didn’t work really well?’ ‘What did you most enjoy about it?’ ‘What did you not enjoy about it?’ ‘If we did it again, what would you like to do differently?’ and so on.

Rob: What has been the biggest challenge?

Shaun: Getting the children that we want to attend to sign up to the club, that is the biggest one. We have 191 children classed as disadvantaged at our school, roughly about 120 families. We have offered paid trips to York Maze and other experiences like that but we have struggled to get some families and children interested. We had about 20 families sign up to the project and they all went. Getting that engagement outside of the school day, that’s the challenge. We have looked at running things during school time to make sure particular children are definitely involved but then by doing this they could end up missing core learning during the school day. Doing the paperwork, finding a provider, securing funding from the OA… all of that was straightforward. Getting the children there and taking part: that has been the challenge.

The Project

Extra-curricular activities for vulnerable or disadvantaged pupils, led by Hidden Horizons. Although the project is open to all children, there has been a drive to recruit pupils eligible for Free Schools Meals (FSM) at any point over the last 6 years, any pupils who have been looked after continuously for at least one day in the last year and pupils who have left care through a formal route such as adoption. Hidden Horizons has provided mainly outdoor practical activities on the school grounds and in the surrounding area, including woodland and beach. Parents have been encouraged to attend with their child to share the experience and to build a positive relationship with the school.


To enhance children’s cultural experiences through outdoor activities related to science and geography and to develop relationships with parents, grow engagement and build positivity around school and learning.


Reduced exclusions and improvements in inclusion within the groups attending. Better SEMH and wellbeing, as evidenced by informal feedback. Some evidence of attendance, enjoyment and attainment gains.

Promoting Health and Education

Professionals with an interest in removing health barriers to learning are invited to hear from those working hard to make a difference for young people as part of the Government’s Opportunity Area programme.

The Department for Education (DfE) is investing £108 million over five years to transform the life chances of children and young people in 12 areas of the country with low social mobility.

Maths Training Opportunity

1st Class @Number (FREE TO ATTEND!!!! Schools are just asked to cover all supply costs)

 This is combined online and face to face training for a link teacher and a TA in how to implement this highly effective, time limited, intervention which can be delivered to an intervention group of up to 4 pupils.

Each topic can be tailored to meet the pupil’s needs. 1st Class@Number1 is for children who are working at the level of Year 1 curriculum and need support to develop their understanding, communication and reasoning skills within number and calculation, a programme following part of the Edgehill offer. The link teacher must attend the first session of the training, TAs are required to attend all the sessions.  A suitable working space will be required.  The TA will start working with their group of pupils straight after the first training date.  Training runs alongside implementation of the teaching programme, meaning that the TA is trained topic by topic.

Numbers Count (FREE TO ATTEND!!!! Schools are just asked to cover all supply costs.)

Numbers Count transforms mathematical learning for the lowest achieving children. Number Count is an intensive teacher-led programme for children in Y1 to Y3 who have the greatest difficulty with mathematics.

How does it work?

A specially trained Numbers Count teacher gives children at least three 30-minute lessons a week for a term, individually or in twos or threes. After a detailed diagnostic assessment, the teacher plans a tailored programme for each child. Rigorous, active lessons focus on number and calculation, helping children to develop skills and attitudes that will ensure good progress.

Impact on Achievement

Over 50,000 children in Years 1 to 11 have been supported by Numbers Count in 2,500 schools:

  • They made an average Number Age gain of 17 months in only 4 months – over 4 times the expected progress
  • 95% of them showed more confidence and interest in learning mathematics in class after Numbers Count.
  • 73% of those pupils achieved national expectations at the end of Key Stages 1 and 2, despite not being predicted to do so.
